RENT-A-TEXAN Computer Consultants are based in Forney, TX, although the company was only founded recently in December 2011, the history & experience in Information Technology of the founder goes back over 2 decades.
The founder & CEO, Andrew McJannett-Smith, has been in the I.T business for over 20 years. He studied and excelled in Computer Studies at his High School in the UK, after which he joined the Military (British Army) for 3 years as an Apprentice Electronic Technician, it was this thirst for knowledge, love of computers and electronics ability that set him on the path of setting up his own computer business in 1990, this was based in Harrow, UK and named Planet Technology.
The I.T business flourished and was primarily focused on making and selling bespoke computers for high end users, repairing faulty equipment and supplying peripherals, alongside this business he also ran a very successful cellphone business that in 1996 was sold to a rival company so he could focus on the computer side of the business again.
Because the business was sold along with the name, a new name for the new business was chosen, along with a move to new larger premises. The new company was formed under the name I.T.S (Information Technology Services) Global Ltd. New staff were hired and a new service & support focus for the I.T business was established.
I.T.S Global Ltd became a leader in the local area for residential and business PC repairs, upgrades and software installations, Andrew went back to college to get his Microsoft networking qualifications at Watford College. This enabled him to add networking to his skillset, so not only was he able to build PC’s, fix electronics down at the component level, but now able to install network cabling along with installing and administering network equipment, such as routers, firewalls, switches and servers.
After 4 years in business, I.T.S Global Ltd was supporting over 100 business customers in the local area with all their needs and requirements, the largest of these customers was a worldwide corporate client Culligan Water. They were based in most countries around the world with their European Head Office based in Paris, France and their Worldwide Head Office in Northbrook. IL USA.
In 2001, Culligan made Andrew an offer to join them as their UK Group I.T Manager. It was this offer and the upcoming birth of his twins that made him sell his client list to another I.T company and to close down the I.T business, to allow more time with his new born children.
As the Group I.T Manager at Culligan, Andrew was given access to vast amounts of funding for I.T projects to grow the I.T infrastructure of Culligan in the UK. He managed to successfully grow them from 3 separate branches running separate LAN’s with Coax network cabling, to a centralized data center with new CAT6 wiring installed in each location, he designed the infrastructure and installed all the servers and networking equipment himself, he setup every PC & user in the whole UK organization single handed, of which there were 200 at Culligan’s peak, along with VPN’s, Firewalls, Cisco copper and fiber Switches, IP based telephone PBX systems, Intranet & 9 Dell & Compaq servers.
He aligned the software and O/S of all the PC’s, using Windows 2000 Pro, XP Pro & Windows 7 for the clients, the email server was a locally run and administered utilizing Exchange server 2007, hand held cellphones were linked via email via VPN’s to the data center. Installation of a centralized web based helpdesk system (Spiceworks) allowed each user to submit tickets and monitor responses, which organized and managed any outstanding issues.
After exposure to all these corporate systems over the 9 years with Culligan, it allowed him to get a great deal of experience working on more expensive and complex corporate equipment. He was exposed to routine upgrading, migrations, active directory, DNS, security, group policy, Dell servers, Compaq Servers, RAID controllers, SCSI, remote monitoring, SQL, Exchange and bespoke software projects. He negotiated with suppliers saving thousands of dollars on phone system costs by using IP telephony PBX’s, saved thousands on cellphone contracts and thousands on hardware/software by finding the best suppliers for the money.
Despite a setback in his personal life, resulting in a divorce, Andrew was able to maintain a level of excellence & professionalism in the work place. During his time with Culligan they never had a security breach or suffered a major Virus, Malware outbreak or system disaster, which stands as a good testament to the reliability and effectiveness of the systems that he implemented.
In 2007 Andrew found his new partner who lived in the United States. They married in 2008 and started the visa process so that Andrew could join his new wife in Hawaii. In 2010 he moved over to Hawaii and started work with an established computer consultancy called Busch Consulting Inc in Honolulu as a Systems Engineer. The job entailed some of the same type of work that he had to do as an I.T Manager; however, being his first taste of working for an American I.T business, it gave him an insight as to the differences between the UK and the USA.
After much thought a decision was made to move to the mainland. In May of 2011 Andrew and his wife Traci purchased a home in Forney, TX. In June the move was made….
Andrew was working on the house for the first 4 months, installing a wired network, wireless network, home media center, CCTV IP based security system that he can monitor on his Android smartphone, a windows home server to back up all the laptops and desktop PC’s and installed a 3CX windows based IP PBX telephone system along with many other building, electrical and decorating tasks. During the time working on his home he was actively looking for employment in the I.T. field. Although jobs in the I.T field were plentiful, he was unable to find a position which would allow him to utilize all of his skills.
He eventually decided to put all his 20+ years’ worth of I.T experience in to founding his own I.T consultancy company. Bringing to prospective clients the vast resources of his time in business in the UK as a business owner, along with the corporate business management experience from his time as an I.T Manager and mixing that with his Systems engineer/Helpdesk work that he carried out with his time spent working in Hawaii. What this has produced is a person whom is a good all-rounder, he is able to manage anything from a simple home PC system error, through to maintaining a corporate WAN or LAN, if it has electricity flowing through it or is a gadget then I am sure Andrew will have used, seen or read about it..
With this wealth of knowledge and experience you can rest assured that you will be in good hands with Andrew or any of his employee’s at RENT-A-TEXAN INC.
